TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The Catholic Diocese of Toledo is warning community members against a scam happening across different messaging platforms online.

The diocese said people are receiving text messages, emails, or Facebook messages from someone claiming to be a pastor and asking for money due to an emergency. They said a pastor would never contact a parishioner directly with an emergency request for cash or gift cards.

Messages asking for help to fulfill a need come through the official communication channels of a parish of the diocese.

Have you received text messages, emails, or messages through Facebook messenger from someone claiming to be your pastor...

If you’re not sure about a text or email you’ve received, do not respond. Call your parish office right away to notify a staff member. You can also file a report through the Federal Trade Commission’s Complaint Assistant which helps the FTC detect patterns of fraud and abuse by going to https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/
