TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - It’s like riding bike... but is it?

May is National Bike Month, when advocates encourage everyone to get outside and take a ride! But for those who haven’t ridden since childhood, that might be easier said than done.

If you’re looking to get into cycling, and still have some questions, your local bike store, like Toledo Bikes!, is a good place to start.

“They’re the experts. They can help you find a bike that will fit you and also fit the kind of riding that you’re interested in doing,” says Toledo Bikes! board president, Steve Atkinson.

As a non-profit, Toledo Bikes provides a lot of free services to get people onto two wheels. They can help you pick a bike that’s right for you. You can buy at a local cycling shop, or buy used online. But be careful because that may not always save you money.

“We recommend bringing those to the bike shop, maybe meeting the seller at a bike shop to have it checked out,” says Atkinson.

You’ll want to make sure your bike fits properly. You should be able to straddle the top bar with feet flat on the ground. The seat should be high enough that your knees are only slightly bent when your pedal is at the bottom position. If the seat isn’t the right height, you’re likely to run into some knee pain.

“If you’re spending five minutes or five hours on a bike, you want to make sure that it’s comfortable and that you’re enjoying the experience,” says Atkinson.

A few basic accessories can also make your ride safer and more pleasant.

“Look at getting lights for your bike, look at getting a lock for your bike, a floor pump... A bike with tires that are properly inflated is safer and more enjoyable to ride,” says Atkinson.

A couple simple tools and a patch kit should be able to tackle any issues you encounter on the road, and if you don’t know how to use them, Toledo Bikes offers bike repair courses.

“I love riding bicycles. That joy that I experience, I want everyone to experience... It provides a sense of freedom and independence for me,” says Atkinson.
