TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The sweepstakes scam is going strong these days. A Toledo couple has already lost thousands to one.

If someone calls you out of nowhere and tells you that you’ve won a contest you didn’t enter, that’s something you don’t want to mess with.

Bruce and Magdalena Greenfield recently won a $2 million jackpot. At least they thought they did.

“It was Mega Millions or some kind of lottery business,” said Bruce Greenfield.

It was a lottery they hadn’t played but with mounting medical bills they thought it was a big break.

“We don’t really want to get into gambling but desperation led us into it,” said Magdalena Greenfield.

The supposed lottery company first needed $500 for fees. The couple deposited the money into a bank account. Then it was $200 for this and $300 for that until the amount got well into the thousands.

“They were saying something like it was for delivery charges or some expense that sounded fairly reasonable,” said Bruce Greenfield.

Nearly two year later, they found there is no jackpot. They’re out thousand of dollars and what they thought was a big break, is a big bust.

The family needed this money for practical things. They weren’t trying to buy waterfront property or some exotic car. They were thinking practically, like paying for drainage outside their home.

“What can I do for us? What can I do for our family?” said Bruce Greenfield.

No real lottery will ask for payment up front. The crooks tried every trick in the book, even offering a refund for a fee. The Greenfields hope you learn from them. Remember, sounding too good to be true almost always is.

“I’m so sorry we got into any, he took a lot of money which we needed but I was hoping like heck that there’s somebody that is honest in all this. I’m finding out that I am wrong,” said Magdalena Greenfield.
