13abc Athlete of the Week - Ethan Cope
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The distance program at St. Francis is loaded with talent. Ethan Cope is coming off an impressive indoor track season, running the fastest mile in school history. The sophomore is taking his success to the track outdoors with the finish line set for the State meet in June.
“Ethan’s a great person to be around and in the meantime the work ethic of our distance program speaks volumes how well we’ve done in years past and this year as well,” said Head Coach George Schaefer.
Despite being an underclassman, Cope serves as a leader this year taking lessons learned from last year’s senior class and applying them to his sophomore campaign.
“Coming in as an underclassman and having the seniors from last year really pushed me this year,” said Cope. “Seeing the competition for this year is really motivating me to put in extra effort.”
Last year as a freshman Cope registered a 4:33 mile at Regionals, with a year of experience under his belt he hopes to find himself a top the podium in June.
“It’s a learning experience,” said Schaefer. “He knows where he is at and what he has to do. He’s goal oriented so he’ll do fine.”
The track and field state meet is set for June 3-4.
