Derek became a part of the 13abc First Warning Weather Team in September of 2021 as the weekend evening meteorologist.
Growing up in rural western Ottawa County, Derek's love of weather came at a young age from watching thunderstorms and snowstorms, as well as the 1996 film Twister. However, after seeing the devastation brought by the 2010 Lake Township Tornado that came within a few miles of the family farm, he knew exactly what career he wanted to pursue.
Derek earned a bachelor's degree in Atmospheric Sciences from The Ohio State University in 2018. While in school, he was an on-air meteorologist for the campus television stations BuckeyeTV and LanternTV. He also interned with Jay and the 13abc Weather Team, as well as WBNS-TV in Columbus during his time in college.
After graduating, Derek moved to State College, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a meteorologist for AccuWeather. During his time there, Derek was responsible for forecasting all kinds of weather across North America and providing live weather forecasts on radio stations from coast to coast, including WCBS 880 in New York City.
Aside from his passion for monitoring and watching the weather, Derek enjoys spending time with family and friends, as well as cheering on his beloved Buckeyes. He also likes to stay active and spend time outdoors golfing, hunting, and fishing.
