You can watch Chief Meteorologist Jay Berschback on 13abc Action News at 5:00 pm, 5:30 pm, 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm. Jay has earned his Television Seal of Approval from both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. He is also an active member in both organizations.
A graduate of the University of Michigan's College of Engineering, Jay received a bachelor's degree in atmospheric, oceanic, and space sciences (all meteorology degrees). While attending college, he was the fill-in weather anchor at WLNS-TV in Lansing, Michigan, and he worked at a private weather forecasting company called Commercial Weather Services (CWS), Inc. At CWS his main responsibility was to provide WJR-AM in Detroit with on-air and off-air weather forecasts.
Before Jay came to WTVG-TV he worked as the morning and noon meteorologist at WTWO-TV in Terre Haute, IN. While in Indiana he anchored the weather, read news stories, interviewed a wide range of guests, and even hosted a live cooking segment.
Jay says that 13 Action News "Live Doppler 13000" and "Vipir" are the most outstanding weather equipment he has worked with to date. Jay also loves visiting area schools to talk with children of all ages about the weather, "Live Doppler 13000" and the television business in general.
One of Jay's most memorable moments as a newscaster was his participation in coverage commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Toledo Zoo in June, 2000. While covering this story, Jay made his national television debut when he appeared on "Good Morning America" alongside Tony Perkins and got the chance to meet and interview Jack Hanna, host of "Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures."
In August 2004, Jay got to fly with the Red Baron Squadron at the Toledo Air Show. His experience in a bi-plane included flips and spins and loops. Did this make the mighty meteorologist sick?? Nope.
In July 2016, Jay got to fly the the USAF Thunderbirds in an F-16. This was a once-in-a-lifetime flight! Jay says it was like riding all of the roller coasters at Cedar Point, at the same time, for 45 minutes... Did this flight make the mighty meteorologist sick?? Yep.
Jay's interests include sporting events (as a fan and as a participant), traveling, and naturally, the weather. In October 1998 he married his high school sweetheart, Jenny, and he says that their life together has been all "sunny skies." Jenny and Jay have two sons that keep them very busy. Their names??? Cumulonimbus and Cirrostratus! Just kidding. Their names are Ben and Will.
