Fire in vacant condo damages connected units

TOLEDO (WTVG) — An early morning fire that startled neighbors and damaged a townhome-style condominium spread smoke to the homes connected on either side.

It started at about 4:30 AM Friday, October 18, 2019, in the Northington Condominiums off West Alexis across from Holey Toledough and next to House of Meats.

Neighbors say the people who live in the unit are not home. According to the woman who lives next-door, the residents are in Florida. That woman says she managed to evacuate with her dog when the smoke started spreading into her condominium.

According to a board member of the condo complex, the building was constructed in 1972 and is complete with firewalls. However, he says the firewalls do not extend to the attic and that smoke made its way throughout the building, which houses six condominiums.

The battalion chief with Toledo Fire and Rescue says there are no injuries to report. Investigators will now look into a potential cause of the fire.
