Defiance Police: Woman Shot, Man Found Dead

DEFIANCE, Oh (WTVG) - Police in Defiance have released the names of the victim and suspect in a shooting incident over the weekend.

According to police, officers were responding to a call for a welfare check for a man making suicidal threats. When they arrived they heard a gunshot and entered the residence.

Inside, officers discovered Becky Clifford, 29, suffering from a gunshot wound. Clifford was transported to a Toledo area hospital via air ambulance. She is currently in stable condition.

Officers then discovered the suspect, 30-year-old John Ruark III, deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Ruark was the resident of the upstairs apartment while Clifford was a resident in the downstairs apartment.

Nearby business owners say the police cleared their parking lots and shut down the street.

Police wrapped up the investigation on the scene after 9:00 pm.

Defiance Police Department Detective Sergeant Dave Richards says there were more people in the home during the incident, but could not release further details.

Defiance Sheriff's Deputies, Defiance County Dog Warden, and Defiance County Victim's Advocacy were also on scene.
