TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Cologuard is an at home colon cancer test that can be a good screening tool. All you do is collect a stool sample and send it into a lab. It tests for DNA changes that indicate colon cancer.
The challenge is that it only detects medium and advanced signs of colon cancer, not necessarily the pre-cancerous lesions that are often caught as a preventative cancer treatment. And often times you'll get a false positive because the older we get, the more your DNA changes and may trigger a positive reading when there is no presence of cancer.
You have to talk to your doctor to order the kit and you send it into the lab. While it's not as reliable as the traditional colonoscopy, it is at least something that can help detect what can be a deadly cancer.
