Bookmobile honors employee who died in accident

The Monroe County Library System is back on the road.

For the first time in more than 20 years, the library has a bookmobile.

Residents of Monroe County live within a maximum of 12 miles away from any given branch of a library. For some, that distance can be too far.

That's where the bookmobile comes in.

MCLS launched a bookmobile in 1949. It ran until 1998, and the county has been without one ever since.

Until now.

Last year, the family of an employee who was killed in a car accident donated $100,000 to purchase a new bookmobile.

Then, library workers raised another $100,000.

They consider it a vital service to the community and touching tribute to that employee, Korri Lake.

"In honor of Korri and her family, we've named the bookmobile Korri. It stands for 'Keep On Reading, Reaching & Imagining,' which is a nice tribute to the generosity of her family," explains Barbra Krueger with the Monroe County Library System.

The bookmobile can carry 1,800 books.

During the unveiling ceremony, family members of Korri added "Anne of Green Gables," one of Korri's favorite books.
