TOLEDO - (13,abc, Action News) - The Lucas County Democratic Party has unanimously endorsed former Maumee Municipal Court judge Gary Byers to run for the commissioner's seat being vacated by Carol Contrada.

Byers was one of five applicants for the endorsement, which the party made at a meeting Monday night.

Byers is a former prosecutor, a former director of the Lucas County Board of Elections and spent 25 years as the Municipal Court judge in Maumee.

Byers most recently lost his bid for re-election back in November, 2017 to Maumee councilman Daniel Hazard.

Contrada announced her retirement from the Lucas County Board of Commissioners in January.

Her term expires at the end of the year, so Byers will have to run in the general election in November.

Several Republicans have expressed interest in the position, but at this time, no candidate has been endorsed.
