MONROE (13abc Action News) - UPDATE: (10:43pm) The Coast Guard reports all of the fishermen have been rescued.
As of 9:50 p.m. Friday night, three people are still missing on the ice outside of Monroe Michigan. This is the second incident in the Brest Bay area for local Coast Guard units.
Lieutenant Ben Chamberlain tells 13abc that around 8:00 p.m. Friday, a witness saw flashing lights on the ice east of Monroe. Two people walked out onto the ice to go fishing but didn't feel safe walking back. The ice rescue team from Toledo U.S. Coast Guard went out searching, as did the Detroit USCG. The Detroit team sent a helicopter. The helicopter rescued the two and took them to the Custer Airport, where they'll be taken to a nearby hospital for observation.
Lt. Chamberlain said a second call came soon thereafter, about three more fishermen stuck on the ice 2,000 yards away from the first incident. The same Coast Guard helicopter will return to Brest Bay to continue the search, once it takes back off from Custer Airport. For the moment, the three fishermen are still on the ice.
