TOLEDO - (WTVG) - The two candidates in the Lucas County commissioner's race are focusing on the jail levy.
Both Democrat Gary Byers and Independent Sandy Spang support the levy.
The design of the new $180-million complex is still up in the air and even the location is not guaranteed just yet.
But former judge Byers says a new jail will save money.
And Sandy Spang believes any savings must be used to pay back the debt.
Byers says, "We're wasting so much money now that if we don't build a new facility, that's more cost effective, we're going to continue wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars a year."
Spang says, "Any saving that we have from more efficient operations need to be applied directly back to the debt so that we can shorten the period of the time that citizens have to pay for that."
Spang and Byers are the only two candidates eligible to win the election.
Republican Sandy Bashaw dropped out so, if you vote for her, your vote will not count.
