TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A family of five is without a home after it went up in flames Thursday morning and a child is suffering life-threatening injuries.
Toledo Fire and Rescue crews responded to a house fire around 7 AM in the 900 block of Prouty near South.
Neighbors tell 13abc a family of five, including three children, were inside the home when the flames broke out.
According to fire officials, the two adults and two children safely escaped, however a third child was still trapped inside. Firefighters battled heavy smoke and flames, and managed to pull the little girl to safety. Authorities tell 13abc she is suffering life-threatening injuries, mostly related to smoke inhalation.
Fire officials say the little girl, whose age is not yet known, appeared to show hopeful signs of improvement once in the ambulance. She was taken to a nearby hospital and her condition is not known.
Her family was also taken to a hospital for evaluation.
According to fire officials, there were no working smoke detectors in the home. One of the adults was awake when the fire started, which is how the rest of the occupants were alerted. They say if that adult hadn't been awake, the fire would have been deadly.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
