TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Happy's Pizza on Dorr St. is holding a memorial fundraiser to benefit family members of a fallen employee.
Sadari Knighten was killed while delivering pizza on June 5. Her employer is holding a fundraiser for her family on Saturday, June 16 from 1:00 - 4:00pm.
The Fundraiser will honor Knighten with a community-style BBQ in the parking lot.
”It’s just the sort of get-together Dari would like,” said Wally Yasso, the store’s franchise owner. “She loved to bring everybody together. This is one way we can honor her vibrant spirit and help her family at the same time.”
Tickets for the Fundraiser are $10 each and will include a meal of BBQ chicken, rib tips, and sides. Happy’s Pizza is donating all the food for the Fundraiser. Tickets will be sold at Happy’s the day of the event. All ticket sales and donations from the event will go directly to the family of Sadari Knighten.
The business honored Knighten's memory on Monday, inviting friends, family and loved ones to came together to remember her.
They gathered outside Happy's Pizza near Dorr and Collingwood in Toledo. Owners held the vigil after the 28-year-old was killed while making deliveries for the pizza shop.
Dozens of Knighten’s family and friends lit candles and shared stories as they celebrated her life. They also wrote personal messages to Knighten on her car in the shop's parking lot.
Toledo police say Knighten was shot June 5, 2018 on the 800 block of Hoag. First responders rushed her to a nearby hospital where she later died.
Her mom says it has been tough without her daughter, but support from the community has made it a little easier.
"I am so overwhelmed," said Sadari's mother Lavern Knighten of the vigil. "I know everybody said how good my daughter was, but I never expected all of these people. Everybody's just been beautiful with us and the family. It's just overwhelming, and I appreciate everybody that came out."
Police arrested Machello Jackson, 16, on June 8 in connection with Knighten's death.
