TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - The 13abc I-Team is learning about a potential breach of your personal information.
This involves ProMedica patients and has turned into a federal investigation.
A former ProMedica employee is now suspected of stealing patient data. Now the Secret Service is even involved.
13abc is not being told where exactly in the company this person worked but we have learned this employee worked for ProMedica from 2017 until 2019. So if you were using ProMedica through that time, now might be a good time to check your credit.
It’s a letter than can take your breath away, it came from the United States Secret Service.
"I'll always be looking over my shoulder, always," said a former ProMedica patient, who does not want to be identified.
She got the letter recently stating that personal information may have been compromised.
"Since everything is electronic and digital that these things will possibly continue to happen," the victim added.
In a follow up letter, ProMedica lays out what happened after being notified by the Secret Service:
“We discovered that, while performing regular job duties from April 3, 2017 to March 27, 2019, the former employee handwrote personal patient data and removed it from the employee's work site without permission."
The letter goes on to say:
"The data may have included your full name, address, date of birth, phone number, medical insurance information, social security number and other demographic information."
"I understand that these things can happen but ProMedica I feel has dropped the ball here. They should be informing everyone on their members. They don't know what these people got away or out with," the victim told 13abc.
This victim believes all ProMedica patients should have been notified not just people potentially affected because she says no one can be 100% sure whether they're information has been compromised.
ProMedica said in a statement Wednesday that the employee took information from 121 files and that the company will evaluate processes and procedures to prevent this type of theft.
"These companies that hold your precious information, they need to take accountability and apprise when this situation happens," the victim added.
FULL STATEMENT FROM PROMEDICA:
The United States Secret Service recently informed ProMedica that it was conducting an identity theft-related investigation involving a former ProMedica employee. We immediately began an internal investigation, and we have been working collaboratively with the Secret Service. Our investigation revealed that while performing regular job duties, the former employee handwrote personal information from 121 patient files and removed it from the worksite without permission.
Earlier this month, the Secret Service and ProMedica separately mailed letters to the affected patients to inform them of the incident and next steps.
ProMedica takes the security and confidentiality of our patient information very seriously, and we will continue to evaluate our processes and procedures to prevent this type of theft. We are deeply disappointed that this happened and will provide the necessary services to help the affected patients through this unfortunate situation.
