Horse in Toledo funeral procession euthanized after being hit by vehicle

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A startled horse taking part in a funeral procession had to be euthanized after it was struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon.

A team of two horses was pulling a hearse near the intersection of Detroit and Oakwood, when a balloon that had been released, popped on a power line causing a loud noise.

The sound frightened the horses, and they took off. That is when the one horse was hit by the pick up.

The horse's injuries were too severe to save its life. A veterinarian was called to the scene to put the horse to sleep.

A number of people gathered at the scene, and many of them were visibly upset by the tragedy. Police and fire crews say it was a difficult day for them as well.

The owner was there to say goodbye to his pet. He says the two horses had worked as a team for a number of years, and that they were both rescued from an auction.

The other horse was not hurt, and no people were seriously hurt either.
