How "adopting a fire hydrant" helps firefighters protect you this winter

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A lot of homes will have fires burning in the fireplace, or extra space heaters to stay warm. That increases the risks of house fires which is something the Toledo Fire Department prepares for. But, they're asking for your help this winter to make it easier for them to help you in case of an emergency. It's called adopt a fire hydrant.

Essentially the Toledo Fire Department is asking you to clear a path around any fire hydrants near your home. So, when you're out shoveling your driveway or sidewalk... take a few extra minutes to shovel about 3 feet around a hydrant, because when it comes to battling a fire - seconds count. Firefighters don't want to waste time digging for a place to hook up their hose when they need to be fighting flames.
