The pictures show the story: giant sheets of ice covering the shallow western basin of Lake Erie. Last week, the lake as a whole was 15% ice-covered. Now Lake Erie is 41.8% ice-covered.
In mid-December, snow surrounded all of Lake Erie's vast shoreline, but there was no lake ice to be found - at least not enough to stand on. Today, brave anglers went out to trusty spots along Catawba Island. 13abc's executive producer - and full-time fisherman - George Noleff says the ice thickness near Catawba is 6-7", but says the ice gets "sketchy" east of the Catawba Peninsula.
Our friends at Maumee Tackle say: "A few brave souls have even gone out onto lake Erie and have gotten into some walleye."
