TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - UPDATE: The back-and-forth saga continues in the effort to save the old St. Anthony Church from the wrecking ball.
The Diocese offered yesterday to "give" the church to the Lucas County Land Bank.
That's after the Land Bank said 'no' on Wednesday. The Land Bank, and City of Toledo were not willing to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to the contractors to quit demolition.
Bishop Daniel Thomas then sent a letter to Land Bank president and CEO David Mann on Wednesday afternoon, offering the church and land as an outright gift to the Land Bank.
Bishop Daniel Thomas asked for the Land Bank to respond Thursday by 5:00 p.m.
On Thursday, Mann responded to the Bishop's letter, asking for more time.
"You have asked for a response by today at 5:00 p.m., but the Land Bank cannot meet that arbitrary and artificial deadline," said Mann.
The Land Bank has stated their reasons being that their Board of Directors must act by resolution, calling for a special meeting on the matter.
Mann continued with, "Most importantly, however, the deadline does not give the Land Bank the reasonable opportunity to inspect the structural and physical condition of the building and the property - an opportunity afforded to every purchaser or donee in almost every real estate transaction that has ever occurred."
The Land Bank has asked to be given until June 21 to inspect the building.
