A major development in the controversial quarry project in Ottawa County.

Ottawa County prosecutors filed a lawsuit Thursday and were granted to temporary restraining order by Judge Bruce Winters. Prosecuting attorney James VanEerten says that means quarry operations will be halted at least temporarily.

VanEerten says the lawsuit stems allegations of zoning violations and the property creating a nuisance in the community.

Quarry operators plan to put spent lime from the Collins Park Water Treatment plant in Toledo into the Benton Township quarry. Lime is used in the water treatment process to soften water and eliminate odor.

People living close to the quarry worry that they lime, which could have come into contact with contaminants, would be put into the bedrock and potentially affecting their drinking water.
