Local company donates tens of thousands of pounds of food to Toledo food bank

TOLEDO (13abc Action News) - One in every six people in Ohio struggles with hunger. To break that down closer to home, according to the organization Feed Lucas County Children there are more than 30,000 kids in Lucas county alone who don't have enough to eat.

A local company that sells its food products all over the United States has teamed up with the SeaGate Food Bank to help change those numbers. The SeaGate Food Bank of Northwest Ohio provides more than one million meals to those in need every year, and they rely on a lot of donations to help make that happen.

An entire truckload of tomato products from Hirzel Canning of Northwood is being loaded up to help stock the shelves at SeaGate.
Karen Moyer is the Marketing and Communications Manager at Hirzel Canning,"We're donating 16 pallets of product which is over 33,000 pounds of food. That works out to more than 31,000 cans and cartons of tomato products going to the SeaGate Food Bank."

Just about anything you can make with a tomato is made by Hirzel canning for its Dei Fratelli brand. What started in the Hirzel family kitchen nearly a century ago has now been served to tens of millions of people. Moyer says giving back has been part of the company's recipe from the start, "It feels good to give back and we're glad to be able to do that. Helping others is a philosophy at Hirzel from the top down."

The SeaGate Food Bank has been feeding people for decades. Cheri Dennis is the Director of Community Engagement, and she says the numbers are staggering, "Every month we feed about 120,000 families. My job is very humbling. Every day I see people in need, but I also see the upside which is people coming together for things like this, supporting our cause and helping each other."

There's a chance for you to get involved with the effort to end hunger this week at Walt Churchill's Market, "This Friday, Hirzel Canning is once again doing the annual Stuff the Truck event at Walt Churchill's Market in Perrysburg. We ask people to bring out food donations to the markets, and we'll double them. So if you donate one can of food, we'll donate a can too."

And at the SeaGate food bank, Moyer says every donation has a big impact on those in need, "Sometimes we caught up in things in our day to day lives and it is easy to forget about those in need. Especially this time of year, we each need to do our part to help feed our brothers and sisters."

While there is a lot of need in this community, today's donation is one more example of all the generosity here too.

There are of course a lot of different ways you can help fight hunger in our region. If you'd like to donate time, money or food, we've posted a link to the SeaGate Food Bank
