MAUMEE, Ohio (WTVG) - A Maumee teenager has made it to the final round of a major scholarship contest, and she's hoping the community can help her win the big prize.

Maya Ramirez is one of five finalists for the Duck brand duct tape prom dress contest. The top prize for the contest is a $10,000 college scholarship.

The winner of the contest is chosen by a public vote. As of Tuesday morning Maya has taken the lead by just a few votes and voting closes on Thursday.

Maya's dress took 42 hours and 17 rolls of duct tape to create and is inspired by several different styles.

"The inspiration for this dress came from a bit of fashion history," says Maya on the contest website. "I love the figure flattering shapes of the 50s and 60s, but with the glamour and drama of the 1920s. Additionally, I was inspired to create the weaving pattern from my heritage. I am a Guatemalan-American, and weaving is a big part of the textile industry in Guatemala."
