High bacteria sparks swimming advisories in Ohio and Michigan

TOLEDO, OH (WTVG) - A Michigan beach is closed to swimmers due to a high level of bacteria.

Luna Pier beach in Luna Pier Michigan has high levels of bacteria.

Testing done during the week of July 10, showed higher than normal levels of bacteria, sparking the closure.

Michigan's Department of Health puts signs out warning swimmers of any changes in the water quality and advises against swimming, especially those who are young children and the elderly.

Both of those populations are more likely to get sick after swimming in water with elevated bacteria levels.

In Ohio, the BeachGuard system shows the inland lake at Maumee Bay State Park also has an advisory.

Testing done on June 14th, detected higher than normal levels of e.coli in the water.

A swimming advisory has been posted at that location as well for those using the inland lake.

There are no other swimming advisories in our area at this time.
