TOLEDO (WTVG) - Mobile Meals of Toledo provides hundreds of thousands of meals to homebound people in our community every year. After noticing that a lot of clients were sharing their meals with their pets, the organization decided to include pet food delivery for clients too. This week volunteers are making deliveries.
Sandra Carpenter got a special Mobile Meals delivery today for her dog Buster, "I don't drive. I don't have a lot of money because I'm on a fixed income. In fact, I often don't have enough money to buy myself food."
Sandra's house was one of several stops for the crew from the Toledo Jeep plant today. James Jefferson says he and the other Jeep workers have been delivering Mobile Meals to people for the last few months, but this was their first pet food delivery, "We're pet owners and pet lovers so this is a very good fit for us. We are all happy to get out here and volunteer to do this. A lot of people go without food for themselves to feed their pets. The pets are their companions. Now the people get healthy meals and so do their pets."
Everywhere the volunteers stopped today, they got the same response, "I thank them and I appreciate. This is a blessing that they take the time to help all of us."
Glenda Clark is a cancer survivor who got food for her two birds today, "Thank you very much, I really appreciate it. It means a lot to me."
Alberta Witcher's dog Love received food today, "Do you think love knows when they bring his food? Oh yes! He waits at the door barking and carrying on until he gets his bone."
It's a program that helps people keep their pets, "I appreciate Mobile Meals and all they do for me and my dog. I love them and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. They've been a real help to me and Buster."
It's those responses that inspire the volunteers, "I'm a big softie and I wear my heart on my sleeve. My heart goes out to all these people. When I meet the people and hear their stories, I start thinking how can I do more?"
Money for the pet food program is raised a number of different ways including grants, private donations, a pet food drive and Santa photos.
