SANDUSKY, Ohio (WTVG) - Tickets are printing, grills are firing, and the coasters are rolling once more in Sandusky, as Cedar Point gears up for another summer of thrills.
"All of us at Cedar Point are just excited for the season to get started," says Tony Clark, director of communications. "It's been a cold, long winter, and we're happy to see guests in the park again."
The park is already famous for world-class rides, but they've devoted time and money this off-season into improving their food options as well.
New venues include BackBeatQue, a Motown-inspired barbecue place with outdoor seating, live music, and all the smoked meat you could ever want. Toward the front of the park, Hugo's Italian Kitchen will offer brick-oven pizza, sandwiches, and pasta -- all made fresh in-house.
The Frontier Festival later in June will also add to the festivities, with fiddle/bluegrass music, square dancing, and more culinary delights fresh off the chuckwagon.
"Monster Jam: Thunder Alley" will open later in the month on the 18th of May, allowing guests to ride in a monster truck and talk to some of the drivers behind their favorite massive machines parked out on the midway.
Not long after, on May 25th, "Forbidden Frontier on Adventure Island" will have park patrons engage in secret missions, group competitions and talking to the locals of the Old West.
"The park has changed a lot over the years, and I think that's what's cool about us is that we're not staying stagnant," says Clark. "We have to keep reinventing ourselves, and do different things, because guests want different experiences."
Experiences like the unbridled insanity of Steel Vengeance, the world's largest hybrid coaster -- with steel ribbons winding through much of Mean Streak's old structure -- which made waves worldwide last summer.
"We're really happy with the impact Steel Vengeance made on our guests," says Jason McClure, VP and general manager of the park. It won the Golden Ticket last year from Amusement Today for best new attraction, and the feedback we've been getting from a lot of our guests is that it's their favorite coaster... and when it's their favorite coaster at Cedar Point, it's safe to say it's probably their favorite anywhere."
After a few test runs of our own, we find it hard to disagree -- and hard to see straight, for that matter.
Cedar Point kicks off their 2019 season this Saturday, May 11th.
