Officer hears gunshots while on patrol, Toledo man ends up facing gun and drug charges

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A Toledo police officer was driving in the 1100 block of Fernwood just after 11:00pm on New Year's Eve when he says he heard gunshots.

The officer made his way to a backyard and found two people, one firing an AR rifle into the air, according to a police report.

The officer held both people at gunpoint and called for backup. Before additional crews arrived, the officer saw a third person coming out of the home with what appeared to be a shotgun. That person ran back into the home and closed the door.

Police documents show that, once backup arrived, the officers tried to make contact with the person inside the home. When no one answered, the officers entered the home and found several weapons, cocaine, paraphernalia and other drugs in plain view.

Officers also found an AK47 with a 50 round drum magazine, a shotgun and four handguns. Police documents show that one of the handguns had been reported stolen from a vehicle by a TPD officer in March.

The property owner, Stephan Garrett, was charged with several felonies including Weapons under Disability, RSP Gun, Trafficking and Possession of Drugs and Permitting Drug Abuse. A second suspect was was charged with Firearms Discharge Restricted.
