DETROIT (13abc Action News) - The Detroit Red Wings open the regular season in the brand new Little Caesars Arena Thursday night.
But if People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have their way, an almost 70-year tradition will be put on ice.
We're following this story with the Detroit Free Press.
As people arrive at the game tomorrow night, PETA representatives will be handing out free toy octopuses, or octopi.
They tell the Free Press that that want to put an end to the tradition of fans throwing real ones on the playing surface after a goal is scored.
PETA wants violators to face immediate ejection, a lifelong ban at the arena, and a five-thousand dollar fine.
There's been no response from the Red Wings' ownership.
