New this year, 32 Ohio state parks are unlatching the leashes, for a limited time your pooch can roam freely on the beach. But there's more to it than you might think.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the presence of K-9's are a useful tool to help with seagull and Canada geese populations, causing them to stay away from the park.

Geneva and Maumee Bay state parks were originally on the list, but were removed and are not included in this project. No other parks in Northwest Ohio are taking part in the program. Leashed dogs are allowed at Maumee Bay State Park, but are not permitted on or in the beach areas.

In a statement, Andy Thompson with Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Parks and Watercraft writes: "After further consideration, we thought this pilot program would be best tested at parks and beaches elsewhere in the state to avoid upsetting the delicate balance of Lake Erie. Unfortunately, this was reassessed after the news release went out. We apologize for the inconvenience."
