Police find person linked to Walmart threats, no longer a safety issue

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Things returned back to normal at area Walmart stores Wednesday night after an active shooter scare in the afternoon.

Several area stores evacuated after the threat, which turned out to be bogus.

According to Toledo police, a man was speaking to a crisis hotline and indicated a threat to Toledo area Walmart stores. That crisis tip line then passed that alert on to Toledo police.

That word prompted store officials to evacuate the Walmart on Glendale Avenue, McCord Road and Central Avenue in Sylvania Township. The Sam's Club at Spring Meadows was also evacuated. This all happened around 12:30pm Wednesday.

No shooter was ever found. Police managed to make contact with that caller on the phone. Officers determined that person was not in the area, he was eventually located in Michigan.

That person is now in custody, no charges have been filed at this time.

A Walmart spokeswoman said in a statement they take all threats seriously and evacuated in an abundance of caution.
