One person shot by police in Sylvania Twp. robbery, ambulance crashes on way to hospital

SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WTVG) - A robbery suspect is dead after an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night on W. Alexis Rd. in Sylvania Township.

Just before 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sylvania Township Police were called to the Stop and Go gas station at 5101 W. Alexis Rd. due to a report of a suspicious vehicle reported by a gas station employee.

Officers arrived five minutes later, and while officers didn't realize it at the time, an armed robbery had just occurred at the location. A masked male suspect brandishing a knife walked around the corner of the business and advanced on an officer.

Despite repeated warnings to drop the knife, the suspect continued to advance on the officer. The officer fired his weapon to stop the suspect, who fell to the ground.

The name of the officer has not been released, but he's a patrolman who's been on the force for approximately one year.

Arriving officers rendered first aid to the suspect. A Lucas County Life Squad ambulance responded and while transporting the suspect to a local hospital, it crashed in the snow storm when it collided with a SUV at Monroe and Statesville Dr.

The paramedics in that unit were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. An additional Life Squad unit responded to the scene and transported the original shooting victim to ProMedica Toledo Hospital.

The suspect was later pronounced dead at the hospital. His name has not been released because the Lucas County Coroner has not identified him yet.
