TOLEDO (WTVG) - A mysterious white powdery substance that caused concern and an evacuation at the federal courthouse in downtown Toledo has been determined to be nothing more than an artificial sweetener.
Fire and rescue crews were forced to evacuate the building Monday afternoon when an employee reported discovering the powder inside an envelope. The building's HVAC system was shut down while authorities evacuated the building and tested the substance. They were able to re-enter the building a few hours after the incident began.
A similar incident occured at a McDonalds on Holland-Sylvania just a short time after the courthouse was evacuated. Employees thought they found a white powder in an envelope there as well, but emergency responders found no substance to test.
