Second arrest made in New Year's Day assault case

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A second person has been arrested in the beating of a Toledo man on New Year's Day.

On Wednesday, police arrested 22-year-old Melvin Ivey, charging him with assault in the beating of Matthew Gullatt earlier this year.

Police say Gullatt was trying to break up a fight outside the Fairfield Inn on Benroe when he was attacked himself. Doctors had to place him in a medically induced coma and now say he could have sustained permanent brain damage.

26-year-old Davion Barrett was previously arrested and charged with felonius assault in the case.

Both men are set to appear in Toledo Municipal Court for preliminary hearings on Friday morning.
