COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVG) - Secretary of State Jon Husted has appointed Fritz Schoen to the Lucas County Board of Election. He will fill the remainder of Dr. Bruce Saferin's term. Schoen was recommended to the position by the Lucas County Republican Party Executive Committee.
Safferin was removed from his position as head of the Board by Husted earlier this month. Husted says the Lucas County Board of Election, which is overseen by the Secretary of State's office, struggled to process and mail absentee ballots during the 2018 election. He also says they had a ballot shortage after an inaccurate projection of quantities, and they lagged in reporting results on election night.
Other members of the Board disagreed with Husted's claims, including Joshua Hughes, who said he blieved the board "did a very fine job on election night."
Husted makes this appointment as he is about to leave his position as Secretary of State and be sworn in as Lieutenant Governor on Monday.
