TOLEDO (WTVG) - If you ride TARTA buses, you no longer need to carry cash or buy bus fares at specific locations around town. TARTA rolled out a new program in June called EZfare, and it's gotten a great response.
All you need to do is download an app on your smartphone. You can buy daily, weekly or monthly passes for both TARPS and fixed-line routes.
Since June, TARTA has tracked nearly 6,000 riders through the new app. In the month of August alone, there were nearly 50 TARPS passes purchased through the app and about 570 fixed-line passes.
The EZfare App was developed in collaboration with 10 other Ohio transit systems to help spread out the cost. TARTA's portion of the money was provided through a grant from the Federal Transit Administration. You can find it in the App Store or the Google Play Store.
If this new technology isn't for you, you can still pay with cash or pre-purchased tickets.
TARTA will also be unveiling more new technology early next year. You will be able to track your bus through the Passio system. You will also be able to use the EZfare program through Passio. It is similar to the former TARTA Tracker program, but it will save TARTA money which can then be spent on other things.
