GoFundMe page set up to assist family of Jahneil Douglas
A University of Toledo football player and Start High School graduate was the victim in an overnight shooting on Monroe Street.
According to Toledo Police, Jahneil Douglas, 22, was shot around 11:15 p.m. outside the Gino's Pizza on Monroe Street near Central Avenue.
By the time police arrived, Douglas had been transported to a local hospital by a private automobile. He was pronounced dead before midnight.
Detectives on the scene said there was an initial fight between two people and that gunfire erupted.
Douglas was a first-team AP All-Ohio honoree in 2016 for the Spartans.
Douglas was a junior at Toledo, majoring in communication studies. He was a 6-foot-3, 300 pound defensive lineman for the Rockets football team. He appeared in seven games last season.
UT Director of Athletics Mike O'Brien released the following statement:
UT football coach Jason Candle said the football family is "heartbroken."
Former UT teammate Mitchell Guadagni has set up a
to help Douglas' family.
Also, O'Brien said a scholarship fund in Douglas' name is in the works.
"This has been such a tragic loss for Jahneil's family and for our football program," O'Brien said in a statement. "Jahneil was a fine young man and a great Rocket, so we felt it was only fitting to create some kind of lasting legacy to honor his memory."
