Toledo man charged with murder after child found unresponsive in bathtub

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - Eric Mathis, 30, is now charged with murder, according to court documents. Mathis was originally charged with child endangering.

According to court documents, Mathis was caring for Nehemiah Wright, 11 months, at a home on Nebraska Ave. Mathis allegedly put the infant in a bathtub without supervision. The child was later found face down and unresponsive. A doctor pronounced the child dead at an area hospital.

The Lucas County coroner's office performed an autopsy on Wright. Police say that produced new evidence, prompting the additional murder charge against Mathis.

Mathis faced a judge on the charge Tuesday morning. The judge set his bond at $100,000. He's due back in court next Tuesday.

The infant's death marks the second homicide of 2018.
