TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - One man has been killed after allegedly attacking a woman with a hatchet.
Toledo police say they responded to a shooting on Nelson Avenue, just east of Lodge Avenue Thursday afternoon.
When police arrived, they found Bernard Neyland, 59, suffering from a gunshot wound and a woman suffering from multiple lacerations.
Neyland died at the University of Toledo Medical Center.
According to Lt. Kevan Toney, Neyland allegedly assaulted Lakita Wilson, 53. A nearby resident, Benjamin Hand, saw what was happening and stepped in, shooting and killing the man.
Lt. Toney says Neyland and Wilson were in a white pickup truck that stopped near the intersection of South and Spencer. Neyland reportedly began attacking Wilson with an ax or hatchet, causing serious injuries.
Police say that's when Hand came outside with a gun and ended up shooting Neyland. According to investigators, Hand is with police and is cooperating in the investigation.
No charges have been filed as of 1:40pm on Wednesday. Lt. Toney says the decision on whether to file charges will be made by the prosecutor's office.
