Walleye fans turn out in droves for a "do or die" game

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - From the Huntington Center to Hensville, Walleye faithful turned out in droves Saturday to cheer on their team.

"The fan energy is unbelievable," Walleye fan Rick Schmidt said. "I've never seen it like that before."

"It's a great atmosphere, a lot of fun and we're loving it," Walleye fan Kyle Smith said.

It was a must-win night for the Fish as they trailed their opponent three games to one. Even with the odds stacked against them loyal fans weren't shy about showing their pride.

"Growlers are done," joked Walleye fan Mark Sovczak. "Stick them with a fork! They're done!"

While the game itself was a sell-out, people outside were still able to get in on the fun. At Fleetwood's Tap Room and Fricker's downtown fans gathered for food and drink. On St. Clair Street little ones enjoyed bounce houses and other games.

While the game was the big draw people say the atmosphere around it was just as fun.

"This is awesome for what it's doing for Toledo," Walleye fan Tim FIsher said. "It's really exciting."

Win or lose, Fish fans say they're just glad to have been a part of an amazing experience. Regardless of the outcome they'll be back next year to support their team.

"You're still going to be a fan, right, whether they win or lose?," 13abc reporter Michael Bratton asked a fan. "Yeah, obviously, yes," Walleye fan Ella Vansteenkiste said.
