There are now 37 reported pediatric flu deaths nationwide. The other group that is seeing some major and potentially fatal complications are cardiac patients. The latest report published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that if you suffer from heart disease and get the flu, your chances of having a heart attack go up 6-fold.
There is a lot of demand put on the heart when it fights viruses and the influenza virus is particularly hard on the heart. It causes an inflammatory response in the heart that makes it more likely for clots to break free and trigger a heart attack.
Doctors say if you fit into the group of patients with heart disease and you get the flu, you're best to check with your doctor as soon as you can. Don't wait for complications to happen.
