Union members from Pennsylvania accuse ProMedica of "union busting"
ProMedica and ManorCare got an unexpected visit from some Pennsylvania nursing home workers. Around 30 union members, including employees from ManorCare Yeadon outside of Philadelphia, marched up to the ProMedica Headquarters on Summit Street and asked to meet with administrators. Security escorted them calmly from the building and they rallied from the park across the street.
Workers are asking ProMedica which now owns ManorCare to recognize it's union. Employees of the facility voted two years ago to join the Service Employees International Union so the organization could negotiate a contract for them. However the union says ManorCare has held the deal up for two years by appealing the move.
"They are refusing to sit down with us and bargain our contract and we are here to talk to them that they have to recognize the union," says Mary Ntemar, a care giver at the Yeardon facility. Elaine Hill is another worker there that says they are fighting for better pay, health care and improved working conditions. "It's our right," she says, "It's our right to have a union it's our right because it's our voice and we deserve to be treated better."
ProMedica and ManorCare administrators declined to meet with the workers as they stood outside shouting union chants.
ProMedica Issued this statement:
"ProMedica was informed that a union from Pennsylvania planned to hold informational picketing to disseminate its views near ProMedica Toledo Hospital this week. It is important to note that this is informational picketing only and not a strike.
SEIU Health Care Pennsylvania and HCR ManorCare have a dispute regarding a skilled nursing facility in Pennsylvania. The dispute is currently pending before the National Labor Relations Board, and we await its decision.
