UT usher has seen plenty at Savage Arena, ready for even more

TOLEDO (WTVG) - When Savage Arena opened in the late 1970s, Tom Asbury was there. When the Toledo women won the WNIT, Tom was there. In fact, he has seen just about everything the past four decades at the arena.

Forty-three years ago, he helped a friend of his who was the ticket manager, and he's still at it today.

Asbury is an usher and has only missed a handful of games through all of his years, when he was battling heart failure and cancer at the same time.

"I'm the ultimate Toledo fan, and I just love sports," Asbury said.

Asbury has seen his fair share of talented players come through Savage during his time, including NBA superstar LeBron James, when he was playing for Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.

It's a side job he loves. Tom has been retired for 18 years after working at Chrysler in Perrysburg for 33 years.

"Everybody in the stands, you know, they're great people," Asbury said. "I want to be a Rocket."
