TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - When former ECHL commissioner Patrick J Kelly sat down to talk with Fox Sports 1230 hosts Joe Kinsey and Anthony Bellino Friday morning, no one expected the bombshell that would drop.
After Kinsey asked what's being done with the trophy as it awaits its new champion, Kelly paused, then let it fly, "I don't know if I should say this, but Colorado kept the trophy."
"I am shook right now," Kinsey exclaimed.
The Kelly Cup the Toledo Walleye and Newfoundland Growlers are playing for... isn't the real Kelly Cup.
According to Kelly - the namesake of the trophy - the previous champion Colorado Eagles never gave it back. After winning the ECHL the past two years, the Eagles bumped up to the AHL and took it with them.
Kelly said the league created a replacement trophy which it will award to either Toledo or Newfoundland.
The Growlers have a 2-1 lead, with Game 4 being played tonight at the Huntington Center in Toledo.
