Lourdes suffered its first three-set sweep of the season on Friday evening, falling to Siena Heights 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 inside the SHU Fieldhouse in Adrian, Mich.
“Siena Heights played well and we didn’t match their level for most of the night,” head coach Greg Reitz said after the match. “We were off from the start and couldn’t find a rhythm. This was a tough loss for us. We need to right the ship and learn from this match.”
A 7-1 run in the opening set allowed the Saints to take the lead 10-5, and the hosts would not relinquish it the remainder of the set. Lourdes battled back to tie the stanza at 18, but was unable to overcome .082 hitting for the set and fell behind in the match.
In the second set, the Gray Wolves committed 11 attack errors and hit -.025. Siena Heights scored the first four points, but Lourdes was able to fight back and tie the set. With the set tied at 14, the Saints scored five of the next six points to take the lead for good.
Siena Heights raced out to an 8-3 lead in the third before a 12-3 Lourdes run put the Gray Wolves in front 15-11. The Saints would score the next five points to regain the lead, starting a 10-1 run that would put the match out of reach.
Tylar Roberson (Elkhart, Ind./Central H.S.) led the Gray Wolves with 12 kills, but Lourdes managed to hit just .063 as a team for the night. Carol Goncalves (Brazilia, Brazil/Sagrado Corcacao de Maria H.S.) handed out 25 assists and had 11 digs for a double-double while Niki Polce (New Boston, Mich./Huron H.S.) had a team-high 12 digs. Evan Matheson (Fallon, Nev./Churchill County H.S.) recorded five blocks.
Taylor Felver led Siena Heights (15-10, 8-6 WHAC) with 13 kills, hit .355, and had a match-high 15 digs while Ashleigh Shay added 11 kills and six digs.
Lourdes (16-3, 13-2) will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon, traveling to South Bend, Ind. to face Indiana-South Bend in the final non-conference match of the regular season. First serve is set for 3 p.m. inside the Student Activities Center.
