Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall) beat the buzzer in overtime as the Lourdes men’s basketball team fell behind early, but held off Aquinas and grinded out a 69-66 victory on the road in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
“I’m happy with the way we responded today,” said head coach Josh Gibson. “We really didn’t play our best today, but we found a way to grind out a road win. Kadeim hit a big-time shot and played great for us today.”
Aquinas (5-15, 4-7 WHAC) came out firing early on, jumping out to an 11-2 lead with 15:58 left in the first half. Back-to-back jumpers from Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) and Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) and a three-pointer from Deuce Martin (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) helped Lourdes cut the Saints lead to 11-9 with 12:52 left in the first half.
The Saints would hold a slim lead until the 4:44 mark of the first half, when Lauf found Jones for a jumper that gave Lourdes its first lead at 24-22.
With the contest tied at 29-all late in the first half, Lauf and Jones hit back-to-back layups to end the opening stanza and give Lourdes a 33-29 halftime lead.
Lourdes stretched its lead to as many as 43-32 in the second half following a Jones layup, but were unable to put Aquinas away in regulation.
The Saints chipped away at the Gray Wolf lead and hit a pair of late free throws to knot the game at 60-60 and force Lourdes to play in its second consecutive overtime contest.
The overtime period was another battle as neither team got ahead by more than four points. With Lourdes holding onto a 66-62 lead following a layup from Jones, Aquinas fought back to tie the game at 66-all.
After Aquinas missed a potential go ahead field goal late in overtime, Lourdes took advantage of having the final shot. Lauf was able to beat his defender to the middle of the lane, where he found Jones in the corner through traffic. From there, Jones hit a fall away three-pointer at the buzzer to seal the 69-66 victory.
Jones led all scorers in the contest, netting 26 points. Snow also had a big night offensively, adding 25 points and grabbing seven rebounds. McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds in the victory.
Jesse Hills led the way for Aquinas with an 18-point effort.
Lourdes finished 25-of-60 (41.7%) from the field and hit eight three-pointers in the victory. Aquinas hit 22-of-54 (40.7%) shots and five three-pointers.
Lourdes won the battle on the boards by a 42-6 margin.
The Gray Wolves (14-7, 5-6 WHAC) are back in action on Wednesday evening as they travel to Rochester (Mich.) for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
