A late 13-2 run from the Gray Wolf men’s basketball team propelled them to a 65-63 victory over Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foe UM-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
“This was a resilient victory by our guys,” said head coach Josh Gibson. “We had to keep throwing punches and were able to land a few. This is a gutsy victory and one that we are really happy to get. I’m really proud of the effort these guys put forth today.”
The visiting Wolverines (3-11, 1-5 WHAC) took an early 11-9 lead after the two teams went back and forth in the early minutes of the contest. An 11-0 run fueled by two three pointers from Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) and five points from Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) helped Lourdes retake the lead at 20-11 with 10:17 left in the first half.
From there, UM-Dearborn gained momentum, using a 13-0 run to retake the lead at 24-20 with 5:25 left in the first half. The hosts were able to take control heading into the intermission, scoring 11 of the final 13 points of the half. Tyler Kegley (Mount Gilead, Ohio/Northmor) hit a layup with five seconds left to help Lourdes take a 36-31 lead into the break.
UMD came out of the intermission on fire, taking a 47-38 lead with 11:29 left in the half. The Gray Wolves would string together a 6-0 run capped by a Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall) layup to force a Wolverine timeout and pull within 47-44 with 7:40 remaining in the contest.
The Wolverines would run the lead to 61-52 late, but back-to-back three pointers from Deuce Martin (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) and Lauf cut the lead to 61-58 with 1:43 left in the game. UMD answered with a layup, but Jones and McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights) scored four quick points to help Lourdes climb within 63-62 with 57 seconds left in the contest.
After Lourdes forced a turnover, Jones spotted up from the top of the arc and nailed what would prove to be the game-winning three-pointer with 20.9 seconds remaining. UMD was unable to answer as Lourdes held on to claim the 65-63 victory.
Lauf led the way for Lourdes, netting 20 points, while Snow chipped in 16 points and Jones added 13. Mafiaion Joyner paced the Wolverine offense, scoring a game-high 26 points.
Lourdes finished 25-of-52 (48.1%) from the field and buried 10 three-pointer, while UMD finished 24-of-52 (46.2%) from the floor and went 7-of-18 (38.9%) from three-point range.
Michigan-Dearborn won the battle on the glass by a 30-28 margin.
The Gray Wolves (8-6, 2-5 WHAC) are back in action on Monday evening as they travel to Kent St.-Tuscarawas for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
