The Lourdes men’s basketball team hit 14 three-pointers en route to an 89-67 victory over Lawrence Tech in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference battle inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
“This was a very good team win for us today,” said head coach Josh Gibson. “I have a ton of respect for Lawrence Tech and what they do and think they are as mentally tough as any team in this league. Getting a win against a quality league opponent like this is big for us.”
Lourdes ran its current win streak to seven games, which is now the second longest win streak in program history. It’s the longest such streak during Gibson’s tenure.
After a three-pointer from Kadeim Jones (Dayton, Ohio/Marshall) gave Lourdes an early 7-5 lead and forced a Lawrence Tech (7-9, 4-5 WHAC) timeout, the visitors rattled off a 10-2 run to take a 15-9 lead with 13:26 left in the first half.
Lourdes pulled right back into the contest following a 6-2 run capped by a Christian Wagenhauser (Sylvania, Ohio/Southview) layup to cut the lead to 17-16 with 11:21 remaining in the first half.
Trailing 25-23 with 5:55 left in the first half, Brett Lauf (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) took over for Lourdes and hit four straight three-pointers to help Lourdes grab a 32-27 lead late in the half. Following a LTU timeout, Bryce McComb (Swanton, Ohio/Swanton) nailed a three-pointer to continue the Gray Wolf run.
Lauf put an exclamation point on the first half for Lourdes, nailing his fifth three-pointer of the first half with 11 seconds left to push the Gray Wolf lead to 44-31 at the intermission.
The Blue Devils struck first in the second half but Lourdes rattled off five straight points behind a three-pointer from McComb and a dunk from McRay White (Cleveland, Ohio/Garfield Heights) to push the lead to 49-33 early in the first half.
Lourdes continued to dominate the second half, but it was a late 14-2 run capped off by a jumper from Jones that helped give Lourdes its biggest lead of the evening at 83-53 with five minutes left in the matchup. The Gray Wolves were able to hold on to seal the 89-67 victory.
The Gray Wolves finished 31-of-55 (56.4%) from the field and hit 14 three-point field goals in the win. The Blue Devils were 22-of-56 (39.3%) from the field and hit nine three pointers on the day.
Lauf led five players in double-figures for the Gray Wolf offense, netting a game-high 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting from downtown. He also added five assists and four rebounds. Clif Snow (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown) added 16 points, while White chipped in 13 points, and McComb and Jones scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
“I’m really proud of the way we shared the ball today,” Gibson continued. “All five of our starters were in double figures and it shows how unselfish we were. Offensively I think we executed well and put ourselves in a good position to win.”
Lourdes (13-6, 4-5 WHAC) continues Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play at 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening as it puts in win streak on the line at Concordia.
