A slow start proved to be detrimental for the Lourdes women’s basketball team as it fell 94-49 in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference battle at Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon.
Lawrence Tech (18-7, 10-5 WHAC) took control early on in the contest, taking a 9-0 lead just under three minutes into the first period. The hosts pushed their lead to 28-4 after one period.
The Blue Devils hit a three-pointer to open the second quarter, but Sydney Miller (Huntsville, Ohio/Indian Lake) took a pass from Christiana Jefferson (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame) and hit a three-pointer to answer for Lourdes.
After LTU pushed its lead to 37-9, Lourdes used an 8-2 run fueled by back-to-back three-pointers from Sirena Pitts (Orlando, Fla./Ocoee) and Miller to climb within 39-17 with 3:42 left in the first half.
Miller closed the half out by hitting a pair of free throws to help the Gray Wolves get within 48-21.
Lawrence Tech used a 10-2 run to open the second half and extend its lead. Lourdes struggled to get any closer in the third period.
The hosts grabbed their largest lead of the afternoon at the 2:55 mark of the fourth period after a three-pointer pushed the lead to 92-44.
Miller led the way offensively for Lourdes, tallying 13 points. Jefferson added eight points for the Gray Wolves.
Nicole Buckingham scored a game-high 37 points for Lawrence Tech.
Lourdes finished 18-of-61 (29.5%) from the field, including 6-of-26 (23.1%) from beyond the arc. Lawrence Tech finished 35-of-66 (53.0%) from the field and went 11-of-34 (32.4%) from three-point range.
The Gray Wolves (9-15, 4-11 WHAC) will host Siena Heights in a makeup game on Monday evening at 6 p.m. inside the Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center.
