Lourdes opened up play in the first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference jamboree of the season on Friday, and is in sixth place midway through competition at The Mines Golf Course in Grand Rapids, Mich.
The Gray Wolves shot an opening round 395, and finished nine strokes ahead of seventh place Lawrence Tech. Aquinas is currently fifth after carding a day one round of 354. Northwestern Ohio is the overnight leader at 313, 12 shots in front of second place Indiana Tech.
“We had a tough start to the round today playing in the cold and rainy conditions,” head coach Gil Guerrero said afterwards. “I thought we did a better job of battling back as the day went along, and I expect us to play much better tomorrow.”
Makenzie Fannin (Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg H.S.) led the way for the Gray Wolves, firing a round of 93, and is in 24th place overall individually. The junior is one shot ahead of teammate Jenne’ Venier (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood H.S.), who carded a 94.
Skyler Henry (Swartz Creek, Mich./Swartz Creek H.S.) added a round of 101 on the 5,833-yard, par-70 layout, while Lydia Quinn (Bloomington, Ind./South H.S.) carded a 107 to complete the Gray Wolf scoring. Chayce McQueary (Genoa, Ohio/Genoa H.S.) rounded out the lineup, shooting 118 on day one.
Northwestern Ohio’s Caitriona Griffin is the leader after the opening 18 holes, shooting a 76, and is one stroke ahead of teammate Haleigh Gray and Indiana Tech’s Cecilia Heck.
The final round of action will take place on Saturday at The Mines, with a shotgun start slated for 9 a.m.
