Lourdes opened the 2019 baseball season on Friday afternoon splitting a doubleheader with Spring Arbor, winning the opener 11-6 before falling in game two 5-2 at Mercy Field.
“I thought we competed offensively in both games, and am excited with the way we swung the bats,” head coach Jeremy Snow said after the games. “Our starting pitchers need to come in ready to go and throw strikes. We need to be more efficient with our pitches.”
Spring Arbor struck for a run in the first of game one before Lourdes answered with three in the bottom of the frame. A lead-off walk to Jay Denman (Toledo, Ohio/Saint Francis de Sales H.S.) followed by back-to-back doubles by Bryce Gargus (South Haven, Mich./South Haven H.S.) and George Pastor (Walled Lake, Mich./Central H.S.) put the Gray Wolves in front 2-1. Cole Cantelon (Langley, B.C./Brookswood Secondary) increased lead to 3-1 with a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
A throwing error allowed Lourdes to push the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth before the Cougars plated four in the fifth to retake the lead. The Gray Wolves tied the game at five in the bottom of the frame, as Cantelon singled home Cameron Gallo (Mason, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick H.S.).
The Cougars answered with a run in the top of the sixth, taking a 6-5 advantage, but Lourdes erupted for six in the bottom of the frame to rally for their second consecutive season-opening victory. Gargus tied the game with a single and Pastor put the Gray Wolves in front with a sacrifice fly. Gallo doubled home a run and Cantelon’s two-run single made it 10-6. Brad Ammons (Holland, Ohio/Springfield H.S.) doubled to score the final run.
Cantelon finished the game 3-for-3 with four runs batted in while Denman, Gargus, and Gallo each had a pair of hits as part of the Gray Wolves’ 13-hit attack. Pastor drove home three runs.
Adam Hoyos (Oro Valley, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro H.S.) earned the win (1-0) in relief while Zach Brown (Oregon, Ohio/Clay H.S.) started and worked the first 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Gavin Harris took the loss (1-1) for Spring Arbor, yielding seven runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
Vincent Herschberger drove home four runs for the Cougars in the opener, as Spring Arbor tallied nine hits.
Spring Arbor scored first in game two as well, plating four runs in the opening inning, as the Cougars took advantage of two hit batters and a walk. The lead grew to 5-0 as the visitors tacked on another run.
Michael Davis (Whittier, Calif./California H.S.) broke up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth, hitting his first collegiate home run, a solo shot to left. One inning later, Cantelon led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Pastor, closing the gap to three, but that would be all the offense for the Gray Wolves.
Duncan Patterson went the distance to earn the win (2-1) for the Cougars, striking out nine while scattering six hits. Santos Catanzarite (South Bend, Ind./Clay H.S.) suffered the loss (0-1), allowing five runs and six hits in four innings of work.
Davis had the only multi-hit effort for the Gray Wolves in game two.
Lourdes (1-1) and Spring Arbor (3-3) will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday afternoon, with another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
